The EV Charging Cost Formula

Charging cost is three-step arithmetic, and the calculator does it all:

Energy (kWh) = Miles ÷ Efficiency (mi/kWh)   |   Cost = Energy × Rate ($/kWh)   |   Charge Time = Energy ÷ Charger Power (kW)

At 3.5 mi/kWh, a 30-mile commute needs 8.6 kWh. At a home rate of $0.16/kWh that is $1.37 a day. At a public fast rate of $0.45/kWh the same commute costs $3.86 a day — a reminder that the same car can cost wildly different amounts to run depending on where you plug in.

Level 1 vs Level 2 vs DC Fast Charging

The three charging levels differ in power, speed, and where you use them:

  • Level 1 (120V, ~1.4 kW): any wall outlet. Adds about 4 miles per hour of charging — fine for plug-in hybrids and very light daily use, too slow for most pure EVs.
  • Level 2 (240V, 3–11.5 kW): the standard home setup. Adds 12–40 miles per hour and can fully charge most EVs overnight. Installation costs $500–$2,000 but is usually recouped within the first year of home charging.
  • DC Fast (50–350 kW): public stations that add 100–300 miles in 20–40 minutes, but they cost 2–3x more per kWh and are hardest on long-term battery health if used as your daily routine.

For most owners the winning pattern is simple: a Level 2 charger at home for daily driving, and DC fast charging reserved for road trips.

Worked Example: A 30-Mile Commute on a 75 kWh EV

At 3.5 mi/kWh, a 30-mile daily commute needs 8.6 kWh — about 11% of a 75 kWh battery. At home on a 7.2 kW Level 2 charger that is 1.2 hours of charging, costing $1.37 a day, $41 a month, and $500 a year.

The gas equivalent — a 27 mpg car at $3.50/gal — burns 1.11 gallons a day for $3.89, or about $1,419 a year. Home charging saves roughly $919 a year; even charging entirely on public fast charging at $0.45/kWh, you would still save about $350 a year versus gas. Those numbers are exactly why EV ownership math favors anyone who can charge at home.
